Officials told employees at the Jeld-Wen Inc. plant in Hartselle, Ala., yesterday that the facility will be closed in two months. Jeld-Wen acquired the interior door manufacturing plant from Young Door in 1990.

In a statement released after the announcement to employees, Teri Cline, Jeld-Wen communication director, said, "2010 has been another challenging year for the window and door industry because of the extreme downturn in new construction—with housing starts remaining at the lowest levels in 30 years—and a weak remodeling market. After extensive evaluation and discussion, we have decided to close our door plant in Hartselle, Ala."

The move affects 51 employees.  Jeld-Wen has engaged the services of NextJob, a national reemployment company to offer employees at the plant personalized job coaching, job search training, and an opportunity to participate in an upcoming job fair, connecting them with nearby, prospective employers.

With the closing of the Alabama location, Jeld-Wen will continue to operate nine other interior door plants.
