Serious Replacing Glass in Empire State Building Windows

Serious Materials plans to retrofit glass in more than 6,500 windows in the Empire State Building as part of a project expected to reduce energy costs by more than $400,000 per year in the New York City landmark. A 5,000-square-foot processing space is being built on-site at the building with glass to be removed from existing windows, re-used to make super insulating units and reinstalled during evening hours to avoid any disruption to building tenants, the company explains.

He made those comments in an article in Nation's Building News looking at recent price hikes in lumber, attributed in part to some improvement in the new housing market.

Premier Investing to Expand Capabilities

Premier Industrial, makers of Xtrabond sealants, XtraFlash flashing and XtraFoam, reports it recently made some significant equipment acquisitions to enhance its material flow and flexibility. The company added three high-speed cartridge fillers and two 75-gallon mixers to add to its capacity for 2010, says Derek Miller, president.

The supplier enjoyed high double digit growth in 2009, adding more than 20 new jobs at its plants in North Canton, Ohio, and Phoenix, Ariz. Miller notes that the company has expanded its business steadily over the past four years despite the recession.

Sage Receives DOE Funding to Expand Operations

Sage Electrochromics Inc. plans to build a high-volume manufacturing operation for its electronically tintable glass at its headquarters in Fairibault, Minn., thanks in part to more than $100 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy. DOE announced a conditional commitment for a $72 million loan guarantee last week, following up a $31 million Advanced Energy Manufacturing Tax Credit awarded to Sage earlier in the year.
