WDMA Urges Congress to Address Housing Affordability

The Window and Door Manufacturers Association sent a letter to every member of Congress urging for the immediate elimination of Section 301 and 232 tariffs on key home building materials as well as the reinstatement of an exclusion process for Section 301 tariffs.

The issue with the tariffs

According to WDMA, these tariffs continue to negatively impact the housing industry and are putting affordable housing out of reach for far too many American families. Tariffs on home-building materials are unjustified, self-imposed taxes that not only harm industries critical to American homebuilding, property renovation and community development, but they also stifle any hope of economic resiliency.

The current tariffs on home-building materials restrict the U.S. housing sector, which has been further negatively impacted by supply chain disruptions and raw material and labor shortages, says the WDMA. This combination of factors is creating recessionary pressures on the industry, and curtailing U.S. investment in local manufacturing. As a direct result, jobs in construction and installation, architecture and design, development, and remodeling are jeopardized.

The letter, which can be read here, was also sent to the U.S. Secretaries of the Commerce, Treasury, and Housing and Urban Development departments, along with the U.S. Trade Representative.
