Most surprising thing I’ve learned
About a year or so into my career, I began to understand how complex window production really is. From the outsider’s perspective, a window looks basic. However, one will quickly learn that the options and customization of each window type make production far more complex than it appears. That complexity is exactly what makes efficient automation challenging.
My definition of success
Success started as my score card. I focused on the companies’ survival and keeping the lights on. Over time, I began to realize that it is about reputation, relationships and building systems that are best in class and built to last. I now measure success by the creation of value for employees and customers, and the creative legacy for others to continue.
How I stay ahead of the curve
We’ve been in their [Erdman customers] operations long enough to spot the inefficiencies, often before they do. Our relationship with our customers is built on trust; when something isn’t working or when they are running into a challenge with their current process, they trust that we can help. That’s usually where a new product starts. We stay ahead by staying in the room with the people doing the work.
What I’d change about how our industry operates
I would change the seasonality, as more consistent demand would help everyone.
What you might not know our company does
A common misconception is that Erdman Automation only builds glazing equipment or insulating glass equipment. We build a wide range of custom machinery. People also often assume that Erdman only serves residential; commercial machinery is growing rapidly. We’re launching several products in tandem with GlassBuild 2026.
