This next-generation, warm-edge spacer system was developed through a partnership between GED Integrated Solutions, Vitro Architectural Glass and Technoform North America. The system combines industry-leading expertise in automated insulated glass manufacturing, spacer technology and thermal engineering. 

Reducing Edge-of-Glass Thermal Transfer 

In the past, residential window innovation centered largely on improving center-of-glass performance through advanced coatings and gas fills. While those technologies remain important, manufacturers increasingly recognize that overall window performance depends on the entire insulated glass unit (IGU). 

The IGU’s edge-of-glass plays a significant role in thermal performance and condensation resistance. This has accelerated the industry’s adoption of warm-edge spacer technologies to reduce heat transfer around the glass edge, while supporting long-term durability. 

Reimagining the Warm Edge Spacer 

Intercept Extreme redesigns the thermally broken u-channel spacer to reduce conductive heat transfer at the edge of the glass. 

The system utilizes co-extrusion process technology, stainless steel sidewalls thermally broken with a polymer thermal bridge. This hybrid construction helps interrupt the conductive path that traditionally allows heat to transfer through metal spacers, improving edge-of-glass thermal performance and preserving the durability associated with stainless-steel systems. 

For window manufacturers, this approach offers an attractive balance between insulating performance and production practicality. Rather than requiring an entirely new fabrication process, Intercept Extreme runs on the existing GED Intercept platform. This allows manufacturers to expand their product offerings without major manufacturing disruptions. 

Meeting ENERGY STAR 7.0 

The introduction of ENERGY STAR 7.0 has raised the performance bar for residential windows, creating new challenges for manufacturers seeking cost-effective pathways to compliance. 

Achieving a U-factor of 0.22 Btu/hr·ft²·°F, Intercept Extreme in dual-glazed, argon-filled IGUs have successfully and repeatedly passed independent third-party testing. Windows using the system can expect to meet ENERGY STAR 7.0 thermal performance criteria. 

The benefits extend beyond thermal ratings. Improved edge-of-glass temperatures help reduce condensation potential, contributing to greater indoor comfort and enhanced long-term performance for homeowners.

Intercept Extreme was specifically designed to operate on GED’s Intercept 2.5 automated production platform – the most advanced spacer frame platform available for residential systems. The upgrade accommodates production of the full Intercept spacer portfolio. This presents a “good, better, best” offering on a single manufacturing platform. It seamlessly integrates into existing insulated glass production lines without compromising design flexibility or fabrication efficiency. 

The platform supports high-speed automated production, reduces labor requirements, minimizes operator variability and maximizes throughput. Intercept production lines can produce substantially higher IGU volumes than traditional fabrication methods, creating opportunities for increased operational efficiency and profitability.

Intercept Extreme represents a unique collaboration among three industry leaders, each contributing a critical element to the final system. 

  • Vitro Architectural Glass, holder of the patented Intercept® spacer technology, provided the foundation for the system’s proven warm-edge design. 
  • Technoform engineered a thermally broken spacer strip by combining stainless steel with an advanced polymer thermal barrier using its hybrid co-extrusion technology. The result is a flat spacer strip optimized for thermal performance and maintains structural stability. 
  • GED Integrated Solutions developed the automated manufacturing platform that transforms the thermally broken strip into the finished u-shaped spacer frame used in insulated glass production. The system runs on the company’s Intercept 2.5 platform, enabling high-speed automated fabrication.
