Three Design Trends to Watch for in 2019

As we enter the new year and homeowners begin to think about the home projects they’ll tackle in 2019, it’s important to plan for the trends that may take hold in the coming months. New materials, styles and features are already emerging among popular photos on Houzz that will impact the fenestration industry. We’ve identified the top three that will make the boldest statements in the coming year.

Kitchens that Open to the Outdoors

The 2018 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Report found that homeowners are increasingly opening their kitchens to the outdoors with exterior double doors. With more homeowners calling the kitchen the hub of the home these days, they look to outdoor areas to expand living space.

Large sliding and collapsible glass doors make it relatively easy to get that connected feeling that blurs the lines between inside and out. Expect to see more kitchens completely opening up to decks and patios, even in homes with covered or closed-in patios.

Glass and Steel Room Dividers

In recent years, we've seen increased popularity in glass and steel materials for front doors and shower enclosures on Houzz. Good ideas spread quickly: we're seeing more glass and steel dividers between interior rooms and expect that to continue in 2019. They give an open feeling while still providing some privacy and noise control, along with a stylish graphic element or contrasting color to otherwise white walls.

Board and Batten Exterior

The modern farmhouse look has gained momentum in the past few years and we anticipate it will continue going strong throughout the home. In 2019, home exteriors will see some of that throwback love, as well. The board and batten method of construction is really appealing to homeowners for delivering that homey look, while adding texture and interest to what might otherwise be a flat facade.
